The landscapes of Cornwall have inspired artists for centuries. In the 1950s St Ives Modernist painters such as Peter Lanyon and John Wells revolutionised Cornish landscape painting with their wonderful abstractions. Peter Lanyon was one of the few Cornish 'born and bred' painters associated with the St Ives Abstract school and knew the Penwith landscape between St Ives and St Just intimately. A knowledge of the subterranean mining history, Cornwall's megalithic quoits and millennia-old field structures pervades much of the work of Lanyon, Hepworth, Wells and others. 

Cornwall has a dramatically varied landscape from the sub-tropical gardens of Mounts Bay and the beautiful public gardens of the southern coast to the windswept and tree-bare moors along the far west northern coast of West Penwith. All continue to inspire and inform the work of generations of artists working in Cornwall.
