From the ‘father of the Newlyn School’, Stanhope Forbes, and earlier pioneering Cornish artists. Oil painting on rigid surfaces, such as a wooden panels or boards, facilitated techniques such as scraping back surface pigments to create textures and effects not possible with brushes alone. Such was used to great affect by Ben Nicholson and John Wells amongst others. But the principal surface for oils is stretched, primed canvas. Mixed with a medium of linseed oil to aid brush flow and enrich, oil paint is the most versatile and durable of all painting mediums and remains a favourite of Cornish artists today.
