Walter Langley is undoubtedly the stand-out watercolourist within Cornwall's artistic heritage. The Newlyn School artist was the first to arrive in Newlyn and as such is the pioneer of that famous art colony. Whilst an accomplished painter in oils, his principal medium was watercolour. Langley took the medium to new heights particularly in his depictions of the human figure. He soon adopted a social realist approach to his subject matter capturing the hardships and real life challenges faced by the Newlyn fishing community, with a particular sensitivity to the mothers, wives and sweethearts of the fishermen. 

The tradition of watercolour painting continues to flourish in Cornwall. In may ways it is the ideal medium for the en plein air painting for which the region is renowned accommodating spontaneous and swift execution to capture the ever-changing light and weather.
