Abstract paintings for sale from Cornish Artists. Since the St Ives school of Modernist artists that coalesced around Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson in the 1950s, Cornwall; its landscape, megalithic sites, subterranean mining heritage and rugged coastline has inspired abstract painters and sculptors.

Today, whilst there are still wholly abstract painters and artworks, a number of artists in Cornwall work in a more hybrid manner, many producing works which are neither completely abstract nor figurative. There is no strict doctrine and less inclination to belong to one school or another. This produces a rich spectrum of approaches to creating art and a healthy cross-fertilisation of ideas.

The function of the artist has also evolved. The art community is arguably at its best when it is an instrumental part of what is happening in the world around it. A good example of this was the post-war rebuilding of urban Britain and the contribution that many in the visual arts sought to make, articulated by Adrian Heath amongst others. Today the world faces environmental, natural world and geopolitical challenges that we all too aware of and a number of Cornish artists and photographers work in raising public insight and action on these issues - with their tools of figurative and no less expressive, abstract art making.
