Collection: FRED YATES, 1922-2008

Explore Fred Yates paintings for sale.

Fred Yates, 1922-2008, was a British artist renowned for his en plein air naïve paintings employing bold colours and even bolder impasto brushwork. Born on 25 July 1922 in Urmston, Yates fought in World War II alongside his twin brother, who was killed at the Battle of Arnheim.

After the war Fred began painting in Manchester following in the footsteps of the artist that he most admired, L.S. Lowry. Yates moved to Cornwall in 1968, where the unique light, bold coastline and busy fishing villages suited his oeuvre.

He rose to public recognition after exhibiting work at the 1985 exhibition, ‘St Ives 1939–64’ at the Tate in London.

Yates spent the last decade of his life in Rancon, France where he continued to boldly capture the local landscape and people. The artist died on 7th July 2008. His work can be found in many public collections including Brighton and Hove Art Gallery, Liverpool University, and the University of Warwick. Fred Yates works are a joyous, colourful celebration of people, their relationships with one another and the environments they live and play in.

In 2022/ Jan 23 a centenary exhibition of Yates's work was shown at the wonderful Penlee House Gallery in Penzance
