In 1968 Fred Yates moved fulltime to Cornwall. Much of his work was painted outdoors in the long tradition of 'en plein air' painting in Cornwall. The Kiss is a lovely naïve piece which bears witness to Yates' affection for his human subjects; not to mention the clear affection between these particular subjects! There are also very clear echoes in this work of the many human studies and portraits undertaken by L.S. Lowry, whom Yates admired above all other painters.
