In 1992 Fred Yates enjoyed his first London solo exhibition at Thompson's Gallery on Albermarle Street. This self-portrait is a celebration of that event and was a NFS exhibit. The 'It's Bloody Hard Work Folks' inscription is a humourous reference to the pressure of work that the artist would have endured as he prepared for his inaugural solo show in London.  From time to time Fred had appeared in his wonderful beach and town scenes but self-portraits, like this example, were relatively rare. A bold portrait rich in Yates' signature impasto brushwork and colour - and an historic record of a important landmark in his career.

Provenance: Thompson Galleries, Albermarle Street, London. The Artist's estate.
