Gill Watkiss moved to St Just in 1968 and found the people of this old mining town and the surrounding land and seascape an inspiration that became a turning point in her work. Cape Cornwall, England's only cape and in fact only the second cape on these islands along with Cape Wrath in Scotland, lies 6 miles from Land's End on the northwest coast of Cornwall. The Cape became a favourite haunt and subject for Watkiss in it's various, often tempestuous weather conditions faced stoically by the artist's human subjects.
