With 296 miles of coastline, a rugged north coast withstanding the worst that the Atlantic can throw at it but equally some of the world's finest beaches, and a slightly more serene south coast with its safe harbours, world-class sailing and tree-lined creeks, it is little wonder that many Cornish artists gravitate to the coast and sea in their search for subject matter.

Virtually all Cornish artists of note have painted the region's coast, either figuratively or abstractly. One of the most dedicated to the subject was Julius Olsson, founder of the first St Ives school of painting - a group associated with British Impressionism. Olsson's oil paintings of the sea, often moonlit and capturing a fleeting moment of breaking waves, are remarkable in their accuracy of observation and record; all the more so as they predate modern colour photography. 

Today the sea and coast is no less popular a subject for artists. There is perhaps no more dynamic and ever-changing plane to look upon and that, along with the the complex and varied relationship between light and water, is a boundless source of inspiration for artists.
